- please see advert The Department of Sociology at the University of York is amongst the top departments for research in the UK, coming 4th overall in Times Higher Education’s 2021 REF ranking and 1st for impact. Globally, we number in the top 50 Departments of Sociology in the Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities. We are seeking to make three Lecturer/Senior Lecturer appointments in Sociology preferably beginning in September 2022. The new appointees will contribute to the wider teaching and research of the Department and have particular expertise/background in one or more of the following areas: Criminology and related studies; Social media and digital cultures; Quantitative approaches and methods. You will play a leading role in the Department in terms of sustaining and enriching our existing research culture. You will contribute to one or more of our four research clusters – Cultures, Value and Practices; Gender, Sexuality and Inequalities; Language and Social Interaction; Science, Health and Technology – which provide a fertile intellectual environment for the delivery of world-leading research. You will be expected to publish original research of the highest quality and secure research funding by developing research income-generating activities. You will also be expected to teach on our undergraduate and masters programmes and to recruit and supervise research students. You will take an active role in the administration of the Department. The Department is keen to strengthen the diversity of its staff group and therefore particularly welcomes applications from currently under-represented groups (which includes BAME, disabled, LGBT+ and gender-diverse candidates). Skills, Experience & Qualification needed You will have a PhD in Sociology or cognate discipline (or equivalent experience) with appropriate academic professional and teaching qualifications or a willingness to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice. You will have knowledge with a research agenda that can contribute to and enhance one or more of our four research groups outlined above. You will have research expertise in an area that will complement and enhance the Department’s research strategy and goals. You will have highly developed communication skills. You will be able to extend, transform and apply knowledge from scholarship, and design teaching materials to deliver across a range of modules. You will be able to supervise the work of others, for example in research teams or as a student supervisor. You will have a record of accomplishment in producing high quality research and designing and delivering teaching courses. You will be able to evidence dissemination of research findings through various fora. You will have a commitment to high quality work, be creative and positive, and be able to work with others effectively.
